Fixed-weight dumbbells
One weight per bell, no assembly. Fastest to grab, but a full range needs a rack and floor space.
Basic home strength kit
Three equipment families cover almost every home strength program: dumbbells, kettlebells and resistance bands. This reference compares their real weights, construction and selection logic so you can pick a starting kit without guessing.
This is not a shop, a brand page or a claim about any company — it is an independent equipment reference.

A knurled metal bar with plates secured by clips, collars or threaded spinlock nuts. Wide range per pair, slower between sets.
Plates in a cradle, engaged by pin or dial. Fastest load change, usually a lower top-end weight than a plate-loaded bar.
Traditional Russian girya at 16.38 kg per pood, sold in whole- and half-pood sizes.
A ladder from 8 kg upward in 2 kg steps, with intermediate 10 kg and 18 kg bells marked by black handle bands.
Flat loops, tubes and long bands; colour codes vary between brands, so printed tension is the reliable figure.
Key figures
Match the construction type to how much space you have and how often you change loads.
Fixed-weight dumbbells are the simplest option: each bell is one weight, so a rack of them takes floor space and cost proportional to the range you need. They suit a dedicated bench area where the same few weights are used repeatedly.
Adjustable plate-loaded dumbbells use a metal bar with a knurled centre for grip, with weight plates secured by clips, collars or threaded spinlock nuts. They cover a wide load range in one pair, but changing plates between sets costs time.
Selectorized adjustable dumbbells keep the plates in a cradle and let you dial a weight with a pin or dial. They are the fastest to change but usually have a lower maximum load than a plate-loaded bar and a bulkier footprint than a single fixed bell.
| Equipment family | Typical weight range | Smallest increment | Space and storage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed-weight dumbbells | 1–50 kg per bell | One bell per weight | Rack or shelf per weight | Dedicated bench area |
| Plate-loaded dumbbells | 2–40 kg per pair | 0.5–2.5 kg plates | One bar plus plate stack | Wide range in one pair |
| Selectorized dumbbells | 2–32 kg per pair | 1–2.5 kg steps | Cradle footprint per pair | Fast load changes |
| Pood kettlebells | 8–32.76 kg | Half pood (8.19 kg) | One bell per size | Traditional girya work |
| Competition kettlebells | 8–24 kg | 2 kg | One bell per size | Progressive loading |
| Resistance bands | Light to extra heavy | Brand-specific | Packs into a bag | Rehab, travel, assistance |
Three families, three construction logics, three ways to set a starting load.
